Rob Quiney called up as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Watson-c2558’s cover – Cricket News Update
Cricket Australia has called up Victoria opening batsman Rob Quiney as cover for the injured Shane Watson ahead of the Gabba Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, starting on Friday, November 9, 2012.
The 30-year-old left-handed top-order batsman was part of the Australia A squad that played against South Africa in the drawn three-day practice match, at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), between November 2 and 4.
His impressive knock of 85 runs in the first innings, followed by an unbeaten 11 in the second – against a potent Proteas pace attack, led by the World's best Test bowler http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DW-Steyn-c1409 – earned him the selectors’ nod ahead of several all-rounders, who also played for the A team in the tour game.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robert-John-Inverarity-c85980, the head of Cricket Australia National Selection Panel (NSP), said that Quiney’s 85-run knock in the tour game demonstrated a good range of shots and a sound technique, adding that the Victorian is in good shape to grasp the opportunity should he get a call up on Friday.
"http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rob-Quiney-c2340 has impressed the NSP with his performances in all formats in recent years. He was particularly impressive in the Australia A game that concluded at the SCG today," Inverarity said while speaking to media reporters on Sunday.
"http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robin-James-Boyd-Moss-c86323 is a mature player with an equable temperament who has been on the verge of higher honours for some time, and I note his achievements for Victoria were recognised last year when he was named State Player of the Year at the Allan Border Medal evening."
"He is in good shape at the moment and he is ready to grasp his opportunity should he get the nod for Friday," the NSP head concluded.
Veteran http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Queensland-c834 on Saturday and is a doubtful starter for the Gabba Test. Though the extent of the injury is not severe, Cricket Australia is still concerned about his fitness, owing to his calf injury history.
Another injury scare for the Aussies ahead of the opening Test is the former skipper and the prolific middle order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377, who is nursing a hamstring niggle. But no replacement has been named for the Tasmanian star, as he is making rapid progress.
