Rob Ryan joins Dallas Cowboys as defensive coordinator
Rob Ryan has left the Cleveland Browns and is joining the Dallas Cowboys as their defensive coordinator.
Sources said earlier that he had met with the team on Friday and the results of the meeting were good.
Brown has a year left on his contract with the Browns but wasn’t expected to return to the team after head coach Eric Mangini was fired and replaced by Pat Shurmur, offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.
With Ryan gone, d**k Jauron will most likely take over Cleveland’s defense, even though he is also a candidate for the same position with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The ‘Boys have been looking for a defensive coordinator ever since Wade Phillips was fired. He was head coach and also defensive coordinator.
Jason Garrett was named interim head coach after firing Phillips and Paul Pasqualoni was interim defensive coordinator.
However, Pasqualoni accepted a job to be head coach at the University of Connecticut.
48-year old Ryan, twin brother of New York Jets head coach, Rex Ryan, has been in the professional football league for 12 years. He had been with the Browns as defensive coordinator for two seasons and held the same post with the Oakland Raiders for five
years before that.
With Ryan as defensive coordinator, the Browns defense ranked 20th in the League for defensive points allowed and 22nd in defensive yards allowed. The team had a 5-11 record for the second straight season, which led to the dismissal
of Mangini.
Ryan played football at Southwestern Oklahoma State as defensive end. He then coached college football teams after graduating, at Western Kentucky, Tennessee State, and Hutchinson Community College. He broke many records with Hutchinson Community College
including least yards allowed, sacks, and forced turnovers.
He got his professional debut by joining his father, Buddy Ryan, in Arizona as defensive backs coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Ryan’s defense led to a loss to his brothers’ Jets, 26-20 in overtime. The pregame interviews included both brothers jokingly insulting each other about their wardrobes and diets.
The Cowboys and Jets are set to play a game next season at New Meadowlands Stadium. The NFL has not released dates and times of the game yet. The new season will most likely start in the first week of September.
