Robbie Deans upset with loss – Rugby News Update
Robbie Deans, the 52-year-old head coach of Australia, was upset after his team narrowly lost to the visiting Scotland team at Newcastle, on Tuesday June 5.
Prior to the match, Scotland had not won a test match for 7 games, and it was widely expected that the Wallabies will emerge victorious. However, Dean had predicted before the match that Scotland are hard to beat defensively, and they are well organised
at the back. His prophecy came true, as Australia were not able to beat the Scottish defences and lost 9-6.
Deans was ruing the missed chances, and feels that his side was wasteful when they had the opportunity to gain the advantage. However, they can make amends for the result, as they are playing Wales on Saturday, June 9, followed by two other tests.
“We had enough possession to put the game out of reach and credit to Scotland, we just couldn't put them away," Deans said. "We started the second half really well, we had momentum and in conditions like that when you don't turn the score board over things
get messier as the game goes on. We lacked co-ordination to get the job done.”
The Wallabies started well but were undone by Greig Laidlaw, the 26-year-old scrum-half. Laidlaw scored a penalty in the 22 minute to give the visiting team a 3-point lead. He had doubled the lead after 5 minutes. He scored another penalty on 27 minutes
to give Scotland a 6-0 lead.
However, the Wallabies cut the lead into half at 32 minutes, when Mike Harris scored a penalty goal. The teams achieved parity just after the half-way mark, when on 42 minutes; Harris scored another penalty to tie the score at 6-6.
Deans rued the miss kick by Harris during the second half which would have put the hosts into the lead.
Right when the game was ending, Laidlaw once again turned on the magic, and scored an 82nd minute penalty goal, to give Scotland a 9-6 victory.
Speaking about the next game, Dean said, "We've got another Test match on Saturday, first thing we'll have to do is recover and look at the blokes."
