Robbie Keane, the 30-year-old striker, revealed he intended on staying at West Ham United if the club managed to avoid relegation. The Tottenham Hotspur forward joined West Ham in the January transfer window on a loan deal worth an estimated £6 million.
However, the Hammers asked for a more permanent deal, a two-year contract, which Keane agreed to under the condition that the London club managed to stay in the Barclays English Premier League for next season.
Keane emerged from the Wolverhampton Wanderer’s youth academy and made his debut when he was 17 years old. In only his second season he was the leading scorer at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wolves-c40952 and easily their best player, but due to financial troubles he was sold to Coventry City.
He transferred to Coventry for a record breaking price of £6 million and went to recreate his success at his new club. In 34 appearances, Keane went on to score 12 goals after which he received various offers from top European clubs.
The Irish international signed for Internazionale for a fee of £13 million in 2000, but after just a season he was loaned to Leeds United. Keane only managed 10 goals in his time there and was sold to Tottenham when Leeds ran into financial problems.
He arrived at White Hart Lane in 2002 and finished top scorer for the Spurs for two consecutive seasons. The forward was crucial in helping the London side avoid relegation and it wasn’t long before he was awarded captaincy.
Even though he signed a five-year-deal with Tottenham in 2007, he attracted attention from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 and eventually joined the Reds for a fee of £19 million in 2008. He spent just one season at Anfield and scored seven goals before making a return to White
Hart Lane.
Upon his arrival, he signed a four-year-deal with the London side, but only after a few months, was loaned out to Celtic. He scored an impressive 16 goals in 19 appearances for the Scottish side and went on to join West Ham in another loan move.
While Keane is still a Spurs player, he revealed he would have no problem signing a permanent deal with the Hammers if he was guaranteed regular first team football. He insisted he had no intention of sitting on sidelines.
The 30-year-old revealed his desire for first team football while speaking to reporters, “First and foremost, I just want to get on the pitch and play football. It is a short career, so the last thing I want to be doing is sitting on the bench.”
He continued, “At my age, I need to be playing regular football and, hopefully, with the squad of players we have, we're quite capable of staying in the Premier League. If that's the case then I'll obviously be here next year.”
He went on to say, “I would prefer to be criticised for going to play football than be criticised for sitting on the bench and collecting my money. I'm not one of those players who picks my money up for not doing anything.”
