Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Lindland set for 4 December
Two veteran middleweight fighters with very different styles will be clashing on 4 December, according to f4wonline.com. Matt 'The Law' Lindland is set to take on 'Ruthless' Robbie Lawler at the mixed martial
arts event put on by Strikeforce, which will be headlined by a fight between Dan Henderson and Renato Sobral.
Both fighters have long been fixtures of the middleweight (185lb) division, having fought for multiple promotions. Lindland, a former Olympic silver medallist in Greco-Roman wrestling, fought several fights
in the Ultimate Fighting Championships, and had won two in a row before falling out of the company’s graces. He was released due to an advertising dispute (though some maintain it was because his fighting style was seen as being too boring) and went on to
fight for multiple promotions.
The 40-year-old’s star has fallen lately after going 0-2 in 2009, but in May 2010 he rebounded with a win over prospect Kevin Casey to rise to 22-7 over his long career.
Lawler, like Lindland, has lost two of his past three fights, including his most recent match against Sobral at a catch weight of 195lb. Despite Lawler’s perceived advantage on the feet, he was outboxed by
Sobral to lose the decision.
Lawler, 12 years younger than Lindland at 28, has also fought for a variety of promotions including the UFC. He’s 19-6 over his career with 16 knockouts to his credit.
The fight should present an interesting match-up of styles. Lindland has long used his Olympic wrestling pedigree to take fighters down and control them on the ground to win grinding decisions or slow ground
and pound TKOs, while Lawler better is known for his heavy hands and willingness to stand up and brawl, meaning the fight might come down to whether Lawler can keep it standing or not.
