Robbie McEwen to retire after the Amgen Tour of California
Robbie McEwen of Team GreenEdge has decided to end his professional career by the end of Amgen Tour of California as reported by Het Nieuwsblad.
The cyclist is currently seen in action at the Presidential Tour of Turkey and is determined to test his legs for the final time in America.
Robbie started his professional crusade with Team Rabobank in 1996 and stayed with the team for a period of four years.
He accepted an offer from Team Domo-Farm Frites for 2000-2001 seasons and stayed with Team Lotto-Adecco for 2002-08 seasons.
The 39-year-old also rode for Team Katusha from 2009-10 and joined Team RadioShack for 2011 season.
McEwen penned a deal with UCI World Tour debutant side, Team GreenEdge by the start of 2012 season and has not secured any victories in the season yet.
While commenting on his retirement from professional sport, he briefed to Het Nieuwsblad, "I am definitely done after the Tour of California".
The Australian is still under contract with Team GreenEdge for one more year but he will now be seen in a different role with the team.
"Personally, I don't see myself as a DS. Of course you can never say never, but at the moment I think the role I've got is perfect for me”.
“Starting on the bike and then moving into this tactical advisor role is something I'm really looking forward to”, he noted earlier.
“That sort of role is exactly the kind of thing I'm keen to get into, and it'll allow me to spend more time with my family, now based in Australia as well".
Team GreenEdge is enjoying a good debut season at the top level of the sport.
It is currently lying at the fifth overall position at the UCI World Tour Team’s Rankings with a total number of 402 points to its credit.
Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step is leading the classifications with 547 points while Team Liquigas-Cannondale, Team Katusha and Team Astana are occupying the next three spots.
It will be interesting to see how Robbie fits in his new role with UCI debutant side, Team GreenEdge in the coming seasons.
