Robbie McEwen to ride the Tour of Turkey before his exit from professional cycling
Robbie McEwen is set to retire from professional cycling in May 2012. The cyclist has shown interest to ride the Tour of Turkey before finally throwing in the towel to his professional hunt.
He briefed, “My next race is going to be the Tour of Turkey. I was scheduled to ride in Belgium towards the end of the month but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen now”.
“I think Turkey will be the next race unless I find something to ride in the meantime. I’ll try and find something in between but I’m looking at what the options are,” Robbie concluded.
The 39-year-old’s most recent victory during the OCBC Cycling Criterium proved that he still has enough legs to carry on at the top level of sport.
Robbie penned a deal with Shayne Bannan’s side Team Green Edge for the 2012 season and has already helped the team with his stunning performance in Singapore.
Team GreenEdge is making its debut at the World Tour level in the current season and Robbie’s victory came at a perfect time.
The Australian team claimed the first win of the season on its home turf. It claimed the overall podium spot during the UCI inaugural event Santos Tour Down Under 2012.
Simon Gerrans was declared the overall winner of the race after his historical performance throughout the event.
He also grabbed the first position during the Australian Road Race Championships 2012.
McEwen started his professional crusade with Team Rabobank in 1996 and spent a period of four years with the side.
He represented a number of teams during his 17-year professional career, including Domo-Farm Frites from 2000-2001 and represented Team Lotto-Adecco from 2002-2008.
The Australian signed a deal with Team Katusha for the 2009-2010 seasons before accepting an offer from Team RadioShack in 2011.
While commenting on his career, Robbie cited, “You just keep putting in the work every season. Even when I broke my leg in 2009 and came back the next year and still managed to win races”.
Tour of Turkey is scheduled in April and it will be fascinating to watch Robbie during the final races of his admirable career.
