Robbie Renwick succeeds in Men’s 400m freestyle - British Gas ASA National Championships
City of Glasgow’s Robbie Renwick secured the gold medal in the Men’s 400m freestyle final on the first day of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships. The event is being conducted in Sheffield.
The ASA National Championships provides another chance to Britain’s competitive swimmers, who failed to confirm their spots in the national team at the first trials, during March 2011.
The selected swimmers will then represent their country at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
Renwick of Glasgow occupied the gold medal of the distant freestyle event in an astonishing time of 3 minutes and 48.60 seconds. He was followed by David Carry of Stockport, who clocked a superb time of 3 minutes and 49.42 seconds for the silver medal. Lewis
Smith of Warrender Ba followed them on the podium by proving his eligibility for the bronze medal, with a timing of 3 minutes and 52.27 seconds.
Renwick has also represented Britain at the World Short Course Championships and the Commonwealth Games. At the 2008 World Championships, he pocketed a silver medal in the 4*200m freestyle and a bronze medal in the individual 400m freestyle swim. Last year,
the 22-year-old swimmer participated at the 2010 Delhi Games, where he earned a gold medal in the 200m freestyle category, along with a silver medal in the 4*200m freestyle relay.
The gold medallist was undisputed through the race, where he displayed a ferocious swim and kept his fellow swimmers at a considerable distance.
The fourth fastest spot of the 400m event was secured by Alfie Howes, who stayed only one second away from the third finisher, clocking in a time of 3 minutes and 53.77 seconds.
He was followed by Thomas Allen and Ross Davenport, who completed their swims in the fifth and sixth places, with timings of 3:54.45 and 3:54.76 minutes, respectively. The seventh spot was secured by Daniel Coombs, who ended his swim in a time of 3 minutes
and 55.60 seconds.
Renwick expressed his happiness after winning the national title and confirming his spot in the British team to Shanghai, while the podium finishers were awarded with accolades after the session.
