Robby Shelton course record score takes him on top of the leaderboard at the Junior PGA Championship
Robby Shelton’s birdie count continues to climb at the 37th Junior PGA Championship. Through 54 holes, the 16-year-old’s stack of scorecards has 15 circles, other than a stunning eagle during the third round.
However, what he did on Thursday was something out of the box. He started off with an eagle on the second hole and recorded four back-to-back birdies starting from the fourth hole.
The back nine of the course also witnessed him make a good run, as he birdied three of the six holes in regulation, starting from the 10th hole.
Despite having such a great run throughout the round, he failed to end it on a high note and suffered a bogey on the 18th hole.
Yet, he managed to post a course record eight-under par 64 for an 11-under par 54-hole score to lead by one stroke over Cameron Champ. Tyler McDaniel, the overnight leader, was further a stroke back at nine-under and took the third spot.
According to him, his putter worked out well, which was the main reason behind such a great score. He told that he was hoping to carry the momentum in the final round and outshine his opponents at the Sycamore Hills Golf Club.
"It was very special today, one of those days where nothing can go wrong," Shelton said. "I was striping it, putting well and just knew when I started that things were going to turn out well. I have been in these situations before, though not quite as big
as this. I am in a groove right now and hopefully I can carry that through to tomorrow".
Meanwhile, Champ gave the credit of his impressive performance to his driving technique. He told that he was hitting the ball well and created many birdie chances throughout the week.
However, he needs to work a little extra on his game if he wants to snatch a victory from the top contenders in the field.
"I have been hitting the ball really well all week and it's helped my confidence," the 17-year-old champ said. "I started off great again. I birdied two out of my first four holes, so it was a great way to start the round”.
