Robert Allenby off the lead at Mayakoba Golf Classic
Following a windy second round at Mayakoba, Australian golfer Robert Allenby has been able to tee it off with a lead of two shots.
With his second-round lead, the 40-year-old golfer is being eyed as a potential candidate for the top trio tie.
Allenby reached par-71 with the help of five birdies and one bogey at El Camaleon course.
He was able to surge towards the top position by carding a 67, leaving American golfer Chris Stroud.
At present, Will Claxton, Greg Owen and Daniel Summerhays are the top contenders of the event.
Claxton carded a 68 in the first round to gain lead in the event with an eight-under 134.
On the other hand, Summerhays reached six-under 65 with the help of a birdie in the second round of the event. Owens in particular was quite contented with the way he performed.
Likewise, golfers like Summerhays said that the course proved helpful for them to execute perfect drives. He said, "I hit it really solid into the wind. It's a tough driving golf course".
The winner of the 2003 European’s Tour British Masters said, "Tough conditions and drove it in most of the fairways and just kept plugging away and took some chances. It's been a bit of wandering around in the wilderness for a couple of years, so it's nice
to see play is back and it's nice to see a few putts drop in".
Allenby is currently in a tie with Sweden's Richard S. Johnson and Kevin Stadler, both of whom have a cumulative score of 136.
Pundits expect that Allenby, apart from all other contenders, will definitely be able to deliver a positive performance.
According to most of them, he has been able to tee some excellent shots that show his readiness for the competition.
Designer of the course, Greg Norman, is still struggling to find the much needed breakthrough. He missed the cut at 79 and then at 73.
Since then, he has been filling his loopholes. Similar is the case with Mike Weir, who is still showing signs of non-recovery from his elbow surgery.
