Robert Allenby returns to defend his emotional golf title
Robert Allenby will be appearing again in the Australian PGA Championship. Allenby will be defending the title in December. He is known to be one of the top- ranked golfers in Australia and will now be fighting to defend his earlier emotional win acquired with four shots.
The 39-year-old has 22 national wins in hand currently. He is the first golfer who won the “triple crowns”; The Australian masters, Australian PGA and then Australian open, all in the same year.
However, his knee injury has done him much bad. The Australia’s top-ranked golfer tore his knee ligament when he slipped on his boat. He was out fishing. Robert Allenby was getting ready for the final major championship of the year. The long hours in gym and the golf course went all in vain and the injury kept him a good amount of weeks at rest.
The ligament was damaged in the Bahamas keeping him out for three weeks, which led to an arthroscopic surgery for recovery. The only consolation for him in that situation was the fish he had caught and the three weeks he had to cook them.
Although the current surgery still stands in his way, Allenby explains that his form this year has been rather good. He also states that he is confident of his form, and he will be able to display a good sport in the coming event.
This is the final event on the Asia Order of Merit and the Australian tour PGA. The players will be playing for a pool of AUD $1,500,000. Allenby will be running for the title against Kel Nagle, the number five ranked golfer.
The right-handed golfer was said to play The Barclays this month. Allenby was the winner of last year’s Australian and South African weeks. He stood in the runner-up position in the Sony Open and The Players Championship. Allenby finished at a 16 under 265 at the Sony Open.
Now the highest-ranked golfer is said to head back to defend his title in December. Only time will tell whether the course at Coolum is lucky for the right-handed golfer or not. Allenby hopes to have a good run of events.
He entered the 2009 event as a wildcard. The golfer got into the competition with the help of the sponsor’s invitation, Coca-Cola, at the last moment. Allenby played a brilliant bogey -free five-under 66 with four shots at the end.
Just months after his mother had passed away due to cancer, Allenby claimed his fourth victory. He won the PGA tournament last year making it an emotional win. His torn knee wasn’t the only injury the player had faced. His left forearm and wrist were also injured, while holding the heel and craft ran ground. Allenby is currently number 17 in the world.
The pink shirt being symbolic for the player; he dedicated the match to his late mother. Allenby says last year’s win was very emotional for him. Allenby has also won the 2000 and 2001 PGA championships at Queensland golf club and again in 2005 at the Hyatt Regency Coolum.
“There is always room for my fifth Joe Kirkwood Cup,” says Allenby.
Allenby is close to Norman Von Nida in wins, and ranks the second highest. The PGA Championship will be played at the Hyatt Regency Coolum on the sunshine coat. The event will take place from December 9-12.
Ms Anna Bligh, the Queensland Premier states that the government hopes on continuing the support till 2014.
