Robert Andino helps Baltimore Orioles secure narrow 5-4 win against Seattle Mariners – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles secured a narrow 5-4 win against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Tuesday, July 3 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Seattle had won the opening game quite convincingly. With home conditions working in Mariners’ favour, their fans were expecting them to make inroads for a rare series sweep against Baltimore.
To their credit, the Orioles stuck to their task on hand and they responded brilliantly to pressure situations to level the series. The offence that had struggled to score runs in the last few games, took on the responsibility to help the Orioles emerge
victorious in a low scoring thriller.
Manager Buck Showalter also looked very content with what he saw from the Orioles’ hitters and he will be expecting his team to produce similar results in the finale to stay within a touching distance of American League East Division leaders New York Yankees.
Chris Davis provided the Orioles with a great start as he singled to centre and Xavier Avery broke the deadlock to put his team 1-0 ahead. Adam Jones continued his excellent hitting form with an RBI single to centre in the sixth inning and Matt Wieters singled
to centre to put the Orioles in a commanding 4-0 position.
Casper Wells hit a mighty home-run to bring Mariners back into the game. Justin Smoak and Kyle Seager made valuable contributions to level score 4-4 in the eighth inning.
Second baseman Robert Andino produced a big offensive performance at the right time as he hit a tie breaking home-run in the ninth to help the Orioles clinch a stunning victory.
"It's really tough to string something against him," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "You may get one or two shots at him in a ballgame, and we took advantage of it."
"There was a lot of opportunity there to give in and keel over, but Robert had a big swing for us after a couple tough things," he added.
Baltimore’ starting pitcher Wei Yin Chen played a key role in deciding the outcome of the game as he gave up just two runs in six-plus innings.
