Robert Dinwiddie leads the inaugural D+D Real Czech Challenge Open
Robert Dinwiddie stormed into the lead after firing a course-record eight-under par 64 in the opening round of the inaugural D+D Real Czech Challenge Open, on Thursday, October 11, 2012.
The European Challenge Tour event is being played at the Kunetická Hora Golf Club, featuring a total of 114 players from different parts of the world.
The three-time Challenge Tour winner got off to a confident start by recording a par putt on the first hole and followed that with a birdie on the second hole.
He added another two shots on the sixth and the seventh hole to reach the turn with a three-under par score.
His back-nine performance was even better, as he signed his scorecard with a total of five birdies, to take a one-stroke lead over Andreas Hartø.
On the 11th hole, the Englishman’s drive found the fairway bunker. Still, he managed to save the par in the end, which he believes was a crucial save to keep the momentum going on the rest of the holes.
“The save on 11 for par was important,” said Dinwiddie. “There is a decision there to hit it down the right or left of the fairway and I went with a three wood, which went into the bunker”.
He continued, “I just didn’t have enough knowledge of that hole and I scrambled for par and that kept me going. Then I had about six or seven one-putts in a row, which was nice. I hit a lot of good putts and they all went where I wanted them to go”.
According to his stats on the back nine of the course, he used only 11 putts. At the end of the round, he found himself sharing the course record with a 64.
During the English Challenge in July, he was in a similar position, as he led the opening two rounds, before losing grounds on the weekend.
This week, he plans to go a step further and add the fourth Challenge Tour victory to his resume.
“It’s a great start but it’s only the first round and I have to go out and try and build on it tomorrow,” he said.
