Robert Farah, Marcos Baghdatis advance to the last 16 – BMW Open 2012
Robert Farah beats Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-2
Colombia’s Robert Farah, who had to come through qualifying rounds to enter the main draw, did well to upset the seventh seed, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the first round at the BMW open in Munich,
Russia on Tuesday.
Farah made the ideal start, breaking Davydenko in the very first game of the match and consolidated on it to take a 2-0 lead. The Colombian didn't lose his serve throughout the opener, striking again in the ninth game to close
it 6-3.
The 6ft 4in tall made an even better start in the second set, as he clinched first three games to move ahead 3-0. Serving to stay in the match at 2-5, Davydenko failed to hold and lost it 2-6.
Farah pounded three aces and 68 percent of the first serves, claiming 29 of the 40 points on them in the match. The Colombian saved all the three break points he faced and converted four of the six he received.
Ranked 210th in the world, Farah required just an hour and 22 minutes to oust the defending champion.
The Colombian will play Marinko Matosevic of Australia in the round of 16. Matosevic dumped Russia’s Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 in the first round.
Marcos Baghdatis defeats Tobias Kamke 6-1, 3-6, 6-3
Eighth seed, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, survived the scare in the second set to overcome world number 81, Tobias Kamke, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and reach the second round. The Cypriot took an hour and 56 minutes to beat his opponent.
Baghdatis completely dominated the opener, as he allowed the German to win only one game, breaking him in the fourth and sixth to close it 6-1.
The Cypriot drew the first blood in the second set, hitting a blow to Kamke in the third game to grab a 2-1 lead but the German did not take much time to respond, evening out the score at 2-2. Kamke snatched four of the next five
games and sealed it 6-3.
Baghdatis and Kamke started steadily in the decider, holding their serve in the first five games to take the score to 3-2 in the former’s favour. The Cypriot made final breakthrough in the sixth and made the most of it to win 6-3.
The 26-year-old is slated to meet Dustin Brown of Germany in the second round. The German outclassed countryman, Daniel Brands, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the previous match.
