Robert Farah moves into main draw; defeats Dominik Meffert in 3rd round – US Open 2011
World number 282, Robert Farah made his way to the main draws of the U.S Open 2011 beating the 30-year-old German, Dominik Meffert, in a tough 3 set match.
Playing on the hard court at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Farah took just above two hours to finish off with the 3rd round qualifier and into the main draws of the Grand Slam.
Historically, the two have never faced each other before. The first fixture between the two ended up with Meffert walk back to his locker room in devastation. Despite the rankings, Farah has a better view of the hard court.
Aged 24, the Columbian world No.282, Farah has been up as a pro since 2005. Equalling his overall wins on clay and hard court, the young Columbian has had his best performance last year with a 34 to 11 win loss ratio.
Considering his last 10 matches, the 24-year-old has managed to win 6 and lost 4. With a career high of 163, Farah stepped into the U.S Open hoping to regain his former rankings and form.
Playing on the contrary, Meffert, German, is ranked as world No.213 and has a career high of 162. The 30-year-old has been more of a clay court player rather than playing on hard fast circuits. His success on clay has been comparatively
more than that on fast courts.
Considering the advantage the Columbian has over the German, the match was somewhat expected to go in favour of the lower ranked 24-year-old.
Starting off with the match, Robert stormed in serving first and taking away game 1, 1-0. Following the Columbian, Meffert won his first game and levelled up, 1-1. The scores hiked up before the Columbian struck hard and broke
the German in game 8.
With scores now at 5-3, Farah finished off the first set winning 6-3 over the 30-year-old in just 27 minutes and moved on to set 2.
Meffert started off with serving first in set two with a better finish this time. Starting off with a breakpoint win in the first two games, the two levelled up at 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5 and eventually led on to a tiebreak. Meffert
slammed a strong backhand to end the tiebreak in his favour winning 7-6(1) and levelling the match scores 1-1.
Although Meffert jumped back in the game levelling the match scores, he was unable to walk off with anymore set wins. Farah served to starter of the decider and took out game 1. Following up with the Columbian, the 30-year-old
managed to equal scores until game 8.
Breaking the German in game 8, Farah took the lead and went of serving for the last game. With scores at 5-3, the 24-year-old repeated the first set beating winning the third set 6-3 and the match 6-3, 7-6(1), 6-3.
The world No.282 will now face Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in his first round match of the US Open 2011.
