Robert Fernley believes Nico Hulkenberg had the pace to win 2012 Brazilian GP – Formula 1 news
Force India deputy team principal, Robert Fernley has said that their driver, Nico Hulkenberg had the pace to win the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.
Hulkenberg performed convincingly well in the season finale held at Interlagos. He led the race for quite some time until Lewis Hamilton of McLaren overtook him.
Although, he tried to regain his lead afterwards, but failed to do so and had a collision with Hamilton which resulted in the retirement of the British driver. Later on, he faced a drive through penalty and came fifth in the race.
However, Fernley said that they had one of their most exciting races in Brazil and are pleased to see the performance of the German driver.
Furthermore, he admired the driving skills of Hulkenberg and called him one of the most talented drivers in the field.
In addition, he said that they had the required pace to claim victory in the last race, but they are not feeling disappointed and are happy with their result.
“What a race! Certainly one of the most exciting races I've seen with drama on every lap,” Fernley said. “For a while it looked like we were heading for fairly-tale result with Nico leading for so much of the race and showing his skill in the tricky conditions.
We had a great car today and had the pace to win, but it was not meant to be.”
Besides, he showed disagreement with a couple of decisions during the race which included the arrival of the first safety car and the drive through penalty for the 25-year-old.
It will be important to mention that the veteran driver of the Silverstone based team is going to join Sauber in the next season. Therefore, Fernley has wished him all the best for the future and has thanked him for all his contributions to the team.
“On behalf of the team I'd like to say goodbye to Nico and thank him for his contribution to our campaign this season. It has been a pleasure to have him drive our cars,” he added.
It will be very interesting to see how he performs in the coming year with the Swiss team.
