Robert Gamez enters the field of Valero Texas Open as first alternative – Golf News
Robert Gamez has been confirmed to participate in the Valero Texas Open as the first alternative after four players announced their withdrawal from the tournament.
Gamez is having a bad career run in the 2012 PGA Tour season, as he managed to make the cut only once in the three tournaments he has played so far.
He started off his PGA Tour campaign through the Mayakoba Golf Classic, where he recorded back-to-back rounds of 75 that were not enough to earn him a place in the final two rounds.
However, he made the cut in the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com after posting 73 and 72 in the opening rounds. He finished the tournament at one-under par to tie for the 58th position.
The last tournament that he played on the PGA Tour was Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, where he carded 76 and 75 in the opening two rounds to miss the cut for the second time in the season.
However, he has now received another chance to prove his mettle at the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio.
Texas Open is the same event that ended his 15.5-year title drought on the PGA Tour in 2005, since his last victory came in the Nestle Invitational in 1990.
He played a total of 394 events between Nestle Invitational and Texas Open. Currently, he is facing the same scenario, as he has not recorded a win since his victory in 2005.
Therefore, he has a chance of repeating history at a venue where he is regarded as the least favourite to win the title this year.
Apart from participating in the event, he will also get a chance to be a part of the 90th birthday celebrations of the tournament, since its inception in 1922.
Meanwhile, the defending champion, Brendan Steele, has also returned to the field of the tournament that is regarded as one of the oldest events of golf and the PGA Tour.
Steele, despite his poor form, is confident to give a tough time to his rivals at the TPC San Antonio from April 19 to 22, 2012.
