Robert Garrigus sets course record and takes a one shot lead
The Americans are in sublime form at this year’s RBC Canadian Open. The first ten golfers leading the score board are all Americans, mighty effort this is. On Saturday Robert Garrigus stole the show with his 64-shot round three, taking his score to 16-under
for the tournament.
Just a stroke behind is the fellow American, William McGirt with 15-under whereas Scott Piercy is just two shots behind Garrigus. The tournament is still wide open with one round to go, all the top ten players will be in contention for the title on Sunday.
Robert Garrigus’ 54-hole 194 would have done Arnold Palmer proud. By shooting 194 in the first three rounds, Garrigus has not only set the tournament record but has also over taken the feat of great Arnold Palmer by one stroke.
Garrigus had no idea that he had over taken the great Arnold Palmer until he was told about it. “Oops,” said Garrigus. “Sorry Arnie”.
Garrigus will be looking to repeat his third round’s performance on Sunday. If he manages to do that, he will secure the second PGA title of his career.
“This is what we play for,” said Garrigus, who has made just one bogey all week. “Having a one-shot lead and playing good golf, this is a blast. I am very blessed to be in this position. I have got to go make birdies tomorrow”.
The wet conditions have made the greens soft and as a result, golfers are aiming dead at the pin because the ball stops very quickly on the greens.
William McGirt is just a stroke behind Garrigus and he is hoping to have a fun filled fourth round.
“I handled it pretty well,” said McGirt. “We got out there and just had fun and were laughing and joking all day. I know Robert will be laid-back tomorrow. We will probably make fun of Brett, his caddy, all day long”.
Scott Piercy who held the overnight lead with McGirt could not repeat his second round’s performance and fell two strokes behind Garrigus at the end of the day.
On Sunday, six players will start with just four shots behind the leader. Even though Garrigus broke Arnold Palmer’s record on Saturday, he still has work to do ahead.
