Robert Garrigus takes a strong position at the AT&T National
Robert Garrigus carded a four-under par 67 in the second round of the AT&T National to share the second position, at the Congressional Country Club, on Friday, June 29, 2012.
Garrigus started off on the back nine of the course and managed to score four birdies against two bogeys to go two-under for the round.
Another three birdies on the front nine helped him settle two strokes behind the leader, Hunter Mahan, who enjoyed a six-under par 65 to go seven-under par for two rounds.
“I made some good putts for par, kept me going out there today,” he said. “At one point I think I didn't make a par for about six or seven holes. It was kind of back and forth. But it was a lot of fun”.
In the meantime, he also explained that his caddie, Brent Henley, had 40 stitches, as he injured his head on the caddie trailer prior to the start of the opening round.
He told that he received а call on Thursday morning from Henley’s number, although he was not the one who made the call to him.
Instead, it was Heath Slоcum's caddie D.J. Nelsоn calling from his cell phone. He informed Gаrrigus about Henley’s injury.
“It was about noon, and I get a call from him, I'm like, what the heck is he calling me for, he usually never calls me until I see him on the range or whatever,” the 34-year-old American said.
“It was another caddie, it was DJ, Heath Slocum's caddie, told me he cut his head open on the caddie trailer and he's got to go to the hospital”.
He added by saying that he was worried about finding a temporary replacement for him. There, he found Paul Cisco, Vijay Singh and Mark Brooks’ ex-caddie, and asked him for assistance in Henley’s absence.
On day two, Henley returned early in the morning with a huge bandage on his head and asked his employer to start working together once again.
Garrigus looked pleased with his caddy’s return to the course and is confident to make an impression in the remaining two rounds of the tournament.
