Robert Gesink not happy with his sports director, Adri van Houwelingen – Cycling News
Robert Gesink of team Rabobank has always been criticised for his involvement in crashes during a race but he could not kept his cool when his sports director made a public comment. Gesink crashed during the fifth stage of Tour de France 2011 and at the
Vuelta a Espana 2009 when he was close to win the grand tour.
The 25-year-old defended himself as he stated that there are other riders in the game who have been involved in crashes but nobody talks about them. “It is not true that I crash more than others,” Gesink insisted. “But that is what is reported. Luis Leon
Sanchez crashed six or seven times. You hear nothing about that.”
He has been accused by his sports director Adri van Houwelingen that he crashes too often as to which the 25-year-old has responded in fury. He said, "He may give his opinion in public. But if someone has a vision that just is not right, I notice that."
Gesink was obviously upset at comments by his sports director regarding the number of times that he has crashed during a race. The rider has suffered injuries which have kept him out of the season and it looks as if he does not appreciate the comments made
about him.
He further added that, despite the crash at the Vuelta a Espana 2009 he managed to finish the race at sixth position. Robert stated that Tour de France 2011 had nothing to do with his mental strength as it was not his fault and he was not the only rider
to have been victim of the devastating crash that cost him his left collarbone.
Robert finished the GP de Quebec at second place behind the race leader Philippe Gilbert as he won the Tour of Oman earlier this year. He was taken to hospital in Doetinchem, Holland after he crashed during training for the World Championships last month
and has fractured his right leg. He will not be able to get back on his bike for the rest of the season and is expected to make a comeback at the Tour de France 2012.
