Robert Gesink to put his worries behind and start fresh at the Vuelta a Espana
Robert Gesink of Team Rabobank had a rough past season, suffering from the death of his father and a struggling Tour de France 2011.
However, the Dutch professional cyclist has noted that he has learnt his lessons in the past season and is all set to continue his winning pursuit in the remaining part of the year.
The cyclist has already secured an overall victory at the Tour of California 2012 along with a stage 7 win at the race.
Team Rabobank is expected to unleash ‘The Condor of Varsseveld’ at the Vuelta a Espana 2012 which will be a real test for the cyclist.
Robert has represented his side in as many as five Grand Tour races in the season including three Tour de France and two Vuelta a Espana participations to his credit.
He secured the fifth overall position during the Tour de France 2010 and occupied the seventh and the sixth overall spots during the 2008 and the 2009 editions of the Vuelta a Espana.
Robert lost his father in October 2010 after a disastrous crash while he was mountain biking.
He cited, “I was second in the overall standings, but the only thing could think about was getting back to my family”.
“I found it totally useless to descend mountains at 100 kilometres an hour”.
While commenting on his plans for the coming part of the season Gesink briefed to Wielerland magazine, “I don't want to get into a situation like this again – that you are only fighting against yourself”.
“The next time in a similar situation I will say: goodbye, and you will see me again in the Vuelta.”
“I deliberately didn't look for any professional help. I had no good feelings about that. I did it my own way, with my family. Now I am back and happy,” he concluded.
Gesink started his professional career with Team Rabobank in 2007 and has shown his loyalty with the team for the sixth consecutive season.
He has helped the team with numerous victories in the past seasons and it will be interesting to see if the Robert finds his winning momentum in the current part of the season.
