Robert Griffin III back as Washington Redskins beat Minnesota Vikings 38-26 – NFL Recap
Concussion generally hurts confidence and performance of the injured player, but in case of Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3), the injury’s effect was opposite.
After being sidelined in Week 5 game owing to a mild concussion, RG3 returned to the field for Week 6 game against Minnesota Vikings and led his team to victory, 38-26, on Sunday, October 14, at FedEx Field.
After the injury, it was expected that the quarterback would rely more on passing game, but that did not happen and the rookie trusted his legs again, and scored two rushing touchdowns to increase the team’s victory chances.
Overall, he finished the game completing 17 of 22 passes for 182 and scored one passing and two rushing touchdowns. RG3 also threw one interception.
His first touchdown came in the second quarter when he sent a six-yard pass to Darrel Young. In the third quarter, RG3 managed a seven-yard run to score a touchdown.
However, the highlight of the game was RG3’s final scoring move that also proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Vikings.
With less than 10 minutes left in the game, Vikings were 19 points behind Redskins. Vikings scored two touchdowns in quick succession and just when it was assumed that they would take over the lead, RG3 managed a record-breaking 76-yard run to score a touchdown.
He said of the move:
"I took off running and got to the sideline, thought about running out of bounds -- because everyone's been telling me that lately. And I felt like I had the guy outflanked, and then I just took off running. And the rest is history."
Vikings, who have performed very well this season, started this game nicely and dominated the first quarter by scoring three field goals without allowing Redskins to score.
However, they gave away the lead in the second quarter in which Redskins scored two touchdowns and a field goal.
Redskins added another touchdown in the third quarter in which Vikings only got a field goal.
Early in the final quarter, Madieu Williams intercepted a pass and rushed for 24 yards to score a touchdown, leaving Vikings in serious crisis.
Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder provided two touchdowns after the interception return and reduced the deficit to only five points.
At first, he connected with Michael Jenkins on a nine-yard pass. The touchdown was followed by a successful two-point conversion attempt. After a few minutes, the quarterback sent a one-yard pass to Kyle Rudolph. The move was followed by an unsuccessful
two-point conversion attempt.
Later, RG3 scored the record-setting touchdown to end Vikings’ three-game winning streak.
Vikings are 4-2 and placed at second spot in National Football Conference (NFC) North, while Redskins are 3-3 and placed at third spot in NFC East.
