Robert Guerrero successfully defends title against Selcuk Aydin – Boxing News
Robert Guerrero, the current interim WBC welterweight champion, is back in the ring with a pompous and classy unanimous win over Turkish undefeated proud Selcuk Aydin, former WBC Silver welterweight champion.
The bout which headlined the pay-per-view had Robert’s interim gold on the line. The event was brought together by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. The showdown was televised live from HP Pavilion, San Jose, California, United States on July 28,
2012.
Apart from the above main event, the Californian boxing fans also witnessed Shawn Porter take on Alfonso Gomez in a 10-round clash for the vacant WBO NABO welterweight title, co-headlining the fight card.
The night will definitely be a memorable one for Robert as the American southpaw was making a comeback after lapse of almost 14 long months. Moreover, Guerrero just saw his wife, suffering from Leukemia, come out of the jaws of death due to a decent bone
marrow donation made by German hailing Katharina Zech.
All above factors soared Robert’s motivation level sky high. It is this reason why during the whole bout the world number three welterweight was easily able to nullify the Turkish lad’s raw powered jabs.
The 12-round showdown was dominated mostly by Robert since Selcuk lost the pace just after the fourth or somewhat fifth round when due to unknown reasons he started to get sluggish.
Robert already possessed a significant experience advantage in his gear as he was entering his career’s 34th bout, boasting 30 wins with 18 coming by way of knockout. Aydin, on the other hand, was coming off an intimidating 23-bout win streak.
The power game was visibly won by Aydin. Also known as ‘Mini-Tyson’, Selcuk stunned Robert several times by his powerful jabs that have secured him a reputation of being a lethal knockout pounder.
Despite the powerful jabs, Robert did not lose any kind of hope and threw consistently larger number of jabs. After collecting an impressive 116-112 on two cards and 117-111 on the remaining third one, Guerrero stated, “I’m looking for the best fights. It’s
just about getting these guys in the ring. I’m the mandatory to Floyd now. Let’s make it happen.”
Also known as ‘The Ghost’, Guerrero further commented, “He hit hard. He never hurt me anytime. He’s got some punching power. He’s one of the hardest punching guys in the division. He can throw a bomb and he landed some bombs on me. I just shrugged them off
and kept going.”
Aydin, who received his very first career defeat, stated, “I couldn't do what I wanted to do. After the fourth round, something happened. It was like I was seeing double. But there’s no excuse. I lost the fight.”
The win has definitely placed Robert in the limelight as now he has just two men above him Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley. A bout and a win over either will definitely make Robert the new American boxing idol at least in the welterweight division.
