Robert Hurley excels in Men’s 100m backstroke heats - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Robert Hurley of Australia excelled in the preliminary rounds of the Men’s 100m backstroke on first day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, December 12.
The Australian swimmer showed no mercy to his challengers in the 100m discipline and transpired on the finishing wall for first position.
Hurley’s stupendous effort remained only a stroke ahead of his toughest challenger as he made his way towards the finishing wall for first position by producing a nice effort of 50.22 seconds.
Hurley was chased by Matthew Grevers of USA, who 0.33 seconds away from him and surfaced on the finishing blockade for second position by touching the wall with a wonderful timing of 50.55 seconds.
Grevers was traced by Stanislav Donets of Russia, who suffered a loss of 0.28 seconds from his preceding swimmer and concluded his swim in a fascinating time of 50.83 seconds.
Donets was trailed by Guilherme Guido of Brazil, who remained two arm-strokes slower and settled on the finishing end for fourth position by producing a time of 51.14 seconds.
Following that, the audience witnessed gruelling efforts of Aschwin Wildeboer Faber of Spain and Ashley Delaney of Australia, who remained involved in a neck-to-neck race for fifth position.
They tried hard to escape each other over the finishing end but were unable to do so. The duo stayed 0.05 seconds slower from Guido and ended their swims with identical timings of 51.19 seconds.
Subsequently, seventh fastest qualification spot of the race was obtained by Guy Barnea of Israel, who was 0.11 seconds behind and transpired on the finishing end by producing a time of 51.30 seconds.
Eighth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Kosuke Hagino of Japan, who failed to overpower his preceding swimmers. Hagino remained only an inch slower from his foregoing finisher and clocked a time of 51.40 seconds.
In addition, Hurley received massive appreciation from the audience for his commendable form in the backstroke discipline and shared his plans of exceeding the expectations of his supporters by continuing the same in the playoff.
