Robert Kubica admits he had a lucky race
The Polish driver, Robert Kubica, admitted that he was lucky to finish on the podium in the Belgian Grand Prix at the Spa Francorchamps, after making a couple of errors.
"On the second lap through Eau Rouge I saw Lewis [Hamilton] going wide, so I was very wide also and tried to make apex in order to not lose speed", he said.  The Polish driver added he lost the car completely, first to the left and then to the right. He believes he was lucky to continue, and I lost a position to Jenson Button too. Robert had a poor grip on the start, locked his wheels, fronts and then rears.
It seemed that Kubica would finish second but made a blunder during his pit stop when he overshot his mark allowing Mark Webber to take second place ahead of Robert. The Renault driver was trying to take it easy, as the track was slippery and had to change a number of controls on the steering wheel. This caused distraction, it was Robert’s mistake, and he admits it. When he looked up, the car was past the breaking point and mistakenly, he locked up the front wheels and collided with some of the mechanics luckily, not hurting anyone.
Robert Kubica joined Formula 1 in 2006 with BMW Sauber and his career has not been so bad statistically. The podium he took in his very first season impressed spectators and professionals. Robert finished in 16th place with 6 points in just 6 races in his first season. Robert scored an impressive 39 points to secure the 6th place the following year that was his first full season in the Formula 1 with BMW Sauber. He scored his first win in 2008 and gave his best performance to date in 2008 as he scored 75 points to secure 4th place in the drivers’ standings. The next year was not as good as expected by the 25-year old and he was able to score just 17 points in the drivers’ standings to secure a disappointing 14th place with BMW Sauber. Robert left the team after his contract expired and joined one of the front running teams, Renault, for the 2010 season as a full time driver.  Robert has been able to score 3 podiums up until now including the third place at Spa Francorchamps.
Kubica has been performing consistently this season with Renault and is in 7th place with 104 points just 5 points behind Ferrari’s driver Felipe Massa. This podium gave Robert 15 points bringing the 25-year-old 3 points closer to the Brazilian. Vitaly Petrov was able to score some points as well as he scored 2 points after finishing in 9th place at Spa Francorchamps giving Renault a very solid performance this weekend. This also proves that the F duct test had been successful as the cars had a significant difference as compared to the past races in terms of speed. Renault was able to score 17 points in total bringing the team 3 points closer to Mercedes. Team Mercedes is currently 23 points ahead of Renault in 4th place.
Robert qualified in 3rd place at Spa. Keeping in mind Spa is one of the most technical tracks in the Formula 1 calendar. Renault is looking very strong after their performance and will be one of the front running teams at Monza. However, Renault will be expecting good results from Vitaly Petrov in qualifying at Monza, as he was not able to qualify after his accident in the qualifying session at Spa.
“This is a great result for the team after a weekend when we were competitive in every session. Nobody was expecting us to be at this level in Spa, so I think we can be pleased with the work we have done”, said Robert.
