Robert Kubica not happy about Kimi Raikkonen’s decision
Robert Kubica responded to Kimi’s statement, in which he said he did not approach Renault as eagerly as Renault is explaining. He approached them just once and his managers did not go to the team again afterwards.
There were many rumours that the former world champion wanted to return to Formula 1 with Renault for the 2011 season. However, Kimi refused that such developments had taken place and said that he does not want to return to Formula 1 like this. Raikkonen
was not happy with Renault’s unprofessionalism regarding this matter, as they did not talk about this matter as much as the team was exaggerating it.
Eric Boullier, team boss of Renault stated that he was going to meet Kimi to check how serious he is about returning to Formula 1 and then come to a decision. It seemed that Renault was trying to do Kimi a favour and it all seemed quite fabricated. Maybe
that is the reason why the Finn was disappointed with Renault’s attitude regarding this matter.
Eric revealed that Kimi’s management approached the team about Finn returning to the sport in 2011. Raikkonen denied this past Wednesday and said that there was not even a chance of him driving in a Renault next year.
“I thought personally that there was a chance, but apparently it wasn't the case. What he said I think was completely different to what the overall picture was looking like”, said Kubica.
Keeping in mind, Renault has still not decided whether they will keep the Russian driver Vitaly Petrov for next year or not. Kubica said that he would have loved to team up alongside the former world champion next year if it had happened.
“Somehow I'm a bit disappointed because I would have been very pleased with him together in the team. He's a great driver and to have a world champion driver as a teammate would be really good and I think that's what Renault needs as well”, he added.
However, it did not happen and Robert was speechless regarding this matter. It seems that Robert really wants to learn what the champions have to say about it and that is a good sign for Renault. Kubica has been performing very well this season with some
good podium runs and qualifying results. There were many rumours stating that if Felipe Massa has to leave Ferrari, Robert Kubica would be the best option for Ferrari as he has been outperforming many top drivers keeping in mind he does not have the best car
on the Formula 1 grid.
It would be hard to disagree with Kubica about the fact that he believes that the team desperately needs two drivers in order to score some good points. Renault was the constructors’ champion in 2005 and 2006 with the help of Fernando Alonso. After Fernando’s
departure, Renault was never the same anymore as the team returned to where they came from; as the team that is a challenge for the best of the rest.
Many believe that if Flavio Briatore was not forced out of the team, Renault might have returned to the top. However that was the case as Flavio had to leave the team after the decision from the FIA regarding the “Crash gate” scandal went against him. If
Kimi returned to Renault, the team would have had quite a chance of achieving the same greatness again as Raikkonen is a former world champion and has always driven for the top running teams in the sport.
“Everybody would agree that the stronger driver you have, the better the chances of having a good result. On the other hand, you have to evaluate if you are able to pay the drivers and be able to run them. But fortunately, as I said, this is not my job”,
said the Polish driver.
