Robert Kubica out of danger but situation still critical: Doctors
Lotus Renault GP was jolted by the accident of their lead driver Robert Kubica yesterday. Although doctors claimed that the Polish driver was in a stable condition, they said that he was still in a very serious state.
Kubica was participating in the Ronde di Andora rally in Italy, where he crashed his car and sustained severe injuries to the right side of his body. His right arm and leg was fractured badly and he also sustained deep cuts on his arm.
A hand surgeon, Professor Mario Igor Rossello said, “It has been a very important and difficult operation. Robert Kubica's right forearm was cut in two places, with significant lesions to the bones and the tendons. We did our best to rebuild the functions
of the forearm.”
He further added after the operation, “At the end of the operation, Robert's hand was well vascularised and warm, which is encouraging. Following the surgery, Robert Kubica will remain under permanent monitoring overnight because his condition remains serious.”
It took seven hours to operate the arm of Kubica at the Santa Corona Hospital. Lotus Renault was devastated by the news and the team wished the Polish driver a quick recovery.
Eric Boullier, boss of Lotus Renault, said that he would be visiting the hospital along with Kubica’s team-mate Vitaly Petrov in order to get an update on Kubica’s condition.
The accident will cost Kubica the 2011 season as his injury is of a serious nature and he is not expected to recover completely in this year. Lotus Renault will be hoping that the 26-year-old will recover by next season and get behind the wheel.
There were a lot of expectations from Kubica in the 2011 season as Lotus Renault had provided the Pole with a strong car this season. He also delivered in the first pre-season testing at Valencia where he recorded the fastest time on the third day of testing.
Lotus Renault had developed a unique exhaust system in their car, which was also praised by some other teams like Mclaren-Mercedes and Mercedes GP. Both teams hinted at developing a similar system for their cars as well in order to be competitive this year.
However, it will be difficult for Lotus Renault this year without their lead driver. He will be missed by his team and fans during the 2011 season.
