Robert Kubica says he misses being part of Formula 1 – Formula 1 news
Robert Kubica has claimed that he misses being a part of Formula 1, but would not return as a test driver unless he is assured of a drivers’ seat with a competitive team.
The Polish driver has been out of action for quite some time following his career-threatening crash in 2011. He did resume racing in some rallies, but has been unable to attain maximum fitness to be able to get behind the wheels of a F1 car.
When asked about whether he missed the pinnacle of motorsports, Kubica said, “You do everything to get there and to stay there, then from one day to the next, for reasons that we know, you lose the ability to be there. So it’s logical that I miss Formula
1.”
Talking about his fitness, the former Renault and BMW driver added, “I still don’t have enough mobility in my right arm (for Formula 1). There’s still a long way to go and not everything depends on me. I would not be in perfect physical shape to race in
Formula 1. In reality, I couldn’t drive on all the circuits. Monte Carlo for example, you have to turn the steering wheel more and I couldn’t do that.”
Kubica was last seen in an F1 car during the 2011 preseason test in Valencia. He took part in a rally afterwards and ended up crashing his car badly. As a result, he suffered some major injuries to his right arm. He was rushed to the hospital immediately,
where he was treated accordingly.
The 28-year-old driver had to undergo numerous surgeries, but he vowed to make a comeback to the sport, after attaining maximum fitness. He had hoped to recover quickly, but his arm was badly damaged and it has not gained the required strength to compete
in a tough sport like Formula 1.
Although Kubica has been away from action for quite some time, he has been helping Mercedes develop their car at Brackley on the team’s simulator. Due to this, he is confident that he can handle the controls of an F1 car, but needs a bit more time to get
into a position, where he can cope with the G-forces involved while racing in reality.
