Robert Renwick conquers Men’s 200m freestyle prelims - British Gas ASA National Championships
Robert Renwick of Glasgow secured the top qualification spot of the Men’s 200m freestyle in the open class, on the second day of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships.
The ASA Championships are intended towards the completion of the British swimming team, which will take part at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July. These championships provides a chance to those swimmers, who failed to prove their eligibility
in the national team at the first selection trials, which were held earlier in March 2011.
Renwick occupied the top qualification spot into the finals, by touching the wall in a time of 1 minute and 48.89 seconds. Jak Scott of Stirling Swim was almost one second behind Renwick and touched the wall in the second fastest time of 1 minute and 49.72
seconds. Similarly, Scott edged out his strongest competitor, Ross Davenport of Loughborough University, who claimed the third fastest qualification spot in a time of 1 minute and 49.76 seconds.
In the initial lap, Renwick sprinted his way to the finishing wall in a fastest time of 25.44 seconds. He was followed by Scott and Davenport, who finished their swims in the second and third fastest positions, with timings of 25.45 and 25.59 seconds, respectively.
In the second lap, Scott overwhelmed Renwick’s effort by maintaining a lead of 0.76 seconds to emerge as the top contender for fastest qualification. He completed his swim in 52.85 seconds against Renwick’s 53.61 seconds effort. Both of them continued their
severe battle in the third lap, where Scott sustained his fastest spot, posting a time of 1 minute and 21.28 seconds.
In the final lap, Renwick rushed his way towards the finishing wall, overcoming Scott’s effort with a lead of 0.83 seconds, as he clocked in 1 minute and 48.89 seconds for the fastest berth into the finals.
Renwick is now one step closer to earn his Shanghai spot and he is hopeful of retaining his fastest qualification spot in the final rounds, to win the gold medal of the 200m event.
