Robert Renwick earns Men’s 200m freestyle gold Day three – British Gas Swimming Championships
Robert Renwick of Co Glasgow earned the title of Men’s 200m freestyle final on third day of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Monday, March 5.
The British Gas provides a chance to their national stars to contest each other in their exclusive disciplines and confirm their spots in the British team to the 2012 Olympic Games.
The 23-year-old Renwick outperformed his opponents with his mind-blowing pace in the four-lap freestyle event. He confronted strong competition from Ieuan Lloyd of Co Cardiff but with his notable efforts, he succeeded in edging him out on the finishing end for gold medal.
With his exceptional sprint, Renwick remained nearly two strokes ahead of Lloyd on the finishing wall as he clocked a time of 1 minute and 47.33 seconds for gold medal. His title claiming effort remained 0.35 seconds ahead of Lloyd, who settled on the podium for silver medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 47.68 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Robert Bale of Carnforth, who was just 0.17 seconds apart from his former finisher and stepped on the victory stand for third position by posting a time of 1 minute and 47.85 seconds for bronze medal.
After a while, Gemma Spofforth of Portsmouth cemented her place in the Great Britain’s team to the Olympic Games by snaring gold medal of the Women’s 100m backstroke. The 24-year-old Spofforth remained just a nail away from her strongest competitor and earned gold medal of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 00.19 seconds.
She was chased by Georgia Davies of Swansea Perf, who was only 0.02 seconds behind and reached the medal rostrum for silver medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 00.21 seconds. She was followed by Elizabeth Simmonds of Loughborough University, who remained 0.22 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and completed her race by reporting an effort of 1 minute and 00.43 seconds for bronze medal.
In addition, the crowd appreciated ruthless efforts of all participants in their exclusive playoffs whereas the position holders collected accolades for their dazzling efforts after the session.
