Robert Rock, Jorge Campillo and Danny Willett tied for 2nd after first round
Robert Rock, Danny Willett and the Jorge Campillo stood tied for the second position at the end of the first round of the Spanish Open on Thursday.
They scored a 4-under 68 each and displayed an amazing performance throughout the day, at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla in Seville, Spain.
Shaun Micheel is currently on the top of the leaderboard, after scoring a 5-under 67. He is one stroke ahead of the three professional players, who finished tied for the second position.
“The rough is very penal and I am rather surprised at the length given the weather we knew we were expecting this week,” Micheel said. “Organizers could still go out there and trim another inch or two and it would still be a tough challenge”.
Rock reached the second position after shooting four impressive birdies, two massive eagles, two bogeys and one double-bogey.
The 35-year-old Englishman has played one of his best rounds in the current year. He was very happy at the end of the day, as he amazed the spectators by posting a stunning score.
“The first eagle was the more pleasing as it was a harder second shot but then I made a silly error on 14 trying to get out of a fairway bunker,” Rock said. “But it was nice then to get those two dropped shots back at 16”.
Willett shot six long birdies and carded only two bogeys throughout the round. He was able to convert many bogey shots into pars and performed well to achieve the second leading position at the end of the day.
Campillo was one of the most attractive players in the field. He opened the event in an agressive style, as he played a bogey-free round. He scored four birdies and stood at par on the 14 holes.
All the top-5 players did their best in the round, despite tough weather conditions. Strong winds swept through the course and it also rained, making the grass wet and tough for the players.
The competition has reached its new highs. While Analysts said the players who faced difficulty scoring in the first round due to rough weather, will try to do their best on Friday, as winds are forecast to slow down.
