Robert Rock leads weather-marred 2012 Joburg Open - Golf News
Strong winds and thunderstorms again hit the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club on Friday, forcing the tournament officials to call off the day at the same time as they did on Thursday.
The unfinished second round of the 2012 Joburg Open will resume on Saturday at 6:45 am local time, with Robert Rock on top of the leaderboard. There were only a few players who made it to the end of the round and Rock was one of them.
He, along with other players, waited in the clubhouse for the weather to get better. However, that did not happen and now he will have to wait for the next day to confirm his lead in the second round.
Moreover, this was not the first time that the weather marred the tournament. The game was suspended on the first day too, due to the same circumstances. Some players finished their round in the evening, while others on Friday morning.
Also, this happens every year because it is the rainy season in this part of the world and tournaments get affected every year due to thunderstorms and winds.
Some players looked disappointed for not completing their rounds. They said that the interruption always affects the flow and form of a player on the field.
They went on to say that it becomes difficult for a player to maintain consistency, resuming the game after long breaks.
However, the clubhouse leader Rock said, "weather delays are part of the scene when you come here this time of the year. If you don't like that, it would be best not to come".
Rock was among the players who finished their first rounds early Friday morning. He entered the field to complete his final three holes and managed two birdies to score an impressive 65 on the East Course.
Following the first round finish, he moved to the West Course and carded a spectacular eagle on the second hole. He managed four birdies in total to finish at four-under par 67.
"I'm a bit surprised. I didn't do too much practising over the holidays," he said.
His overall tournament score is 11 under par to lead the event while others have to complete their second rounds.
