Robert Samuels stresses on the need for limited-over games in Jamaica – Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robert-George-Samuels-c85810, the incumbent coach of Jamaica Under-19s cricket team, has laid deep emphasis on the need for organising T20 and 50-over competitions at the national level, as he strongly believes that the failure of the Jamaican side in the recently concluded
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 Cricket Board Under-19 tournament is the result of their poor preparations and training in shorter formats of the game.
Samuels is of the view that the limited-over versions of the game have become more technical and scientific in this competitive environment and they need special attention. He opines that no team can thrive at International level without mastering 20-over
and One Day games at the domestic level.
He has urged the Jamaica Cricket Association to organise the tournaments based on shorter formats and train the players professionally at home so that they cope with the challenges of International cricket.
Jamaica’s lack of training in the shorter versions is evident from the fact that they have not won even a single of the five regional T20 tournaments over the past five years and have claimed only one of the five 50-over events.
Talking to the media, Samuels said, “Limited-overs cricket, be it 50 or 20 overs, has become more scientific, as it relates to the planning and execution by teams and players, and due to a lack of focus and attention on these formats nationally we are finding
it difficult to cope," said Samuels who, along with members of the Under-19 team, returned home yesterday.”
He further told, “Limited-overs cricket is an important format and, simply put, Jamaica need to step up to the plate.”
Despite the coach’s hard-pressed demands, the JCA seems to be unable to hold the 50-over annual tournament for want of funds. It has already skipped the T20 domestic event for the same reason.
The newly established body is experiencing a severe financial crunch, which is likely to affect the Jamaican cricket badly.
On the other hand, some analysts believe that the association can http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ward-c96201 off the crises by arranging limited-over tournaments which have become a major source of revenue in this era.
