Roberta Vinci and Li Na through to the second round at the 2011 Mutua Madrid Open
Italian tennis-pro Roberta Vinci secured a thumping 6-4, 6-0 victory over qualifier Olga Govortsova of Belarus on Monday to reach the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open.
World number 37 stuck to her strengths and did not allow her opponent time to breath in a match that lasted one hour and four minutes. Olga broke the serve in the very first game of the opening set but Vinci had other ideas as she broke back immediately to shift the balance of the contest. The Italian had her second chance of breaking the serve in the eighth game of the set which she converted successfully. She secured her next serve game with ease to clinch the opener 6-4.
Vinci dominated the challenger in a completely one sided second set. The Italian broke the serve three times in the set as she completed her win in straight sets. Olga looked clueless against the onslaught by Vinci and leaked crucial points. Her poor shot selection played a vital role in deciding the outcome of the game.
With her accurate and on-target serves, Vinci achieved an impressive 70 percent first serve conversion. The Italian also claimed 58 percent of the points on serve return to assert dominance over her opponent. Olga on the other lacked the firepower and paid the heavy price for making critical mistakes. Vinci has given decent performances on the Women’s Tennis Association tour since the year 2011 has started. Although she achieved some incredible results in the doubles arena, her run in WTA singles world has not been that consistent. Just over a week ago she fell in the first round of Marbella to number seed Zahlavova. She will be hoping to maintain her good form in her next match-up against Alisa Kleybanova of Russia. Kleybanova took the opener with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over number nine seed Shahar Peer.
Meanwhile 2011 Australian Open runner up Li Na also secured 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory over Spanish Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez to book her place in second round of the WTA tournament. Li Na will take on Czech Iveta Benesova in the second round play.
The Chinese tennis-pro held on to her serve games and made the crucial serve break to take the opener 6-4. Sanchez fought back brilliantly in the set and managed to take the set into a tie-breaker. However Li Na did not lose her concentration as she successfully ended the match in straight sets.
"Sanchez is a good player and it's a great win for me," Li Na said. "I know she can be up and down and when she led in the second set I just tried to hang in there and stay aggressive. When she's in control it's tough, so I tried to be the one who took the first hit. I served well and was strong in the end."
