Roberta Vinci and Simona Halep steal the show this weekend – Tennis News
In a clash between top two local stars, Roberta Vinci stunned top seeded Sara Errani to capture the crown at the XXVI Italiacom Open 2013 on Sunday. Elsewhere in Budapest, Simona Halep captured her third title in five weeks after
outclassing Yvonne Meusburger in three sets to earn the limelight.
The Italian number two not only snapped out from a five-match losing streak against her best friend Errani but also captured th ho crown at her home tournament in Palermo for the first time in her 10th attempt.
"I played so well today," the excstatic Vinci commented in a post match press conferecne. "I played very well in the first set, but Sara started to play much better in the second set. Starting the third set I was 4-0 up and had
a lot of chances for 5-0 but lost the game and started to get a little bit nervous, but at the end I won, so I'm really happy right now. I played an unbelievable match today. I knew I had to - Sara is an unbelievable player."
Seeded second in this evnet, Vinci made a powerful start as she displayed brilliant tennis to pull out the opener with a 6-3 score line.
The world number six, Errani re-structured in the following set. She quickly jumped to a 5-1 lead after capitalising on her break opportunities. The top ranked Italian stayed focused and eventually sealed the equaliser by winning
six games to three.
In the deciding set, Vinci re-gained her stregnth and continued hitting powerful forehands and knifing slice backhands. She cruised to a 5-0 lead but lost her concentration afterwards. However, the lower seed slid her serve once
again and clinched the decider with a 6-3 score line.
The Romanian star, Halep, on the other hand is enjoying the best tennis of her career. She conquered titles at Nurnberg and s-Hertogenbosch before reaching the second round at the Wimbledon Championships (lost to Li Na). Halep
re-ignited her spark the Hungarian Grand Prix and captured another title.
"It's a fantastic feeling to win my third WTA title of the year," the high flying Romanian reflected in a post match presser. "I just believed in my chances and I've taken them. I'm really enjoying my game right now. I hope that
I can keep winning."
Halep convincingly entered the match and eventually bagged the opening set with a 6-3 win.
In the following set both players played great tennis but Halep squandered tripple match points in the tie-breaker and lost the set.
The Romanian star went berserk in the deciding set. SHe dominated throughout the set and pocketed the decider with a breadstick.
