Roberta Vinci blue rains on Bojana Jovanovski in the 1st round – Mercury Open 2011
On Monday, 1st of August, The Italian Roberta Vinci won the first round of the Mercury Open 2011 from the Serbian Bojana Jovanovski at the La Costa Resort and Spa Carlsbad, California, in 1 hour, 47 minutes and 34 seconds
3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Jovanovski won the toss and hit an ace. However, in the next few moments she struck 3 double faults out of which two hit the net while the other was a line fault. Additionally, she managed to save all her break points along with,
winning the only break point that she faced.
Although, she did not have a strong return serve she had an exceptional serve which helped her to win 63% of her total serve points and also helped her to sail through to the next set of the match.

Vinci served with great enthusiasm and confidence; smashing two aces and with almost a near perfect accuracy struck one line fault. Although she had an exceptional serve and was able to bag 65% of her total set points, her return serve was average 46% of the
total return points.
In addition, her defence was also sturdy as an ox and she gave only one break point opportunity as she was capable of saving the four out of the five along with, capitalizing on 50% of her opponent’s break points. Due to Vinci’s
consistency, technique and skill she was able to win the set with 7 points more than her opponent’s.
On the contrary, Jovanovski struck three double faults along with three aces and had no consistency in her serve and return serve; hence she was only able to win four game points from Vinci.
The third set was to declare the winner of the match; after taking a beating in the first set, Jovanovski should have jumped back into the set and tried to win the set. However, that was just wishful thinking.
Jovanovski was in a deplorable condition and was further falling into the abyss. Her performance in this set was relatively worse than the previous set. She was still unable to defeat Vinci.
In addition, The Serbian was unable to smash an ace and instead struck another two line faults during the set. The 19-year old (Jovanovski) was not capable to win any break points to her advantage and instead endorsed 2 break points
to her opponent.
It was a close call between both the players but Vinci gained an upper hand by saving a 100% of her break points and instead, converted 2 break points for her advantage.
Despite the age factor, the 28-year-old (Vinci) won the match with 16 points more than her 19-year-old rival’s. Due to her near perfect agility, defence and her experience of the game she won in the later two sets and put her young
adversary to shame.
