Roberta Vinci crushes Alisa Kleybanova to reach the third round of 2011 Mutua Madrid Open
Italian tennis-pro Roberta Vinci secured a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory over world number 24 Alisa Kleybanova on Thursday in the second round of 2011 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open in Spain.
Vinci made a brilliant start to the match by making a serve break in the very first game of the opening set. She looked to attack at every available opportunity and made the challenger run for her money with some high quality tennis.
Ranked 37th in the world, Vinci had her second chance of breaking the serve in seventh game of the set. She smashed a wonderful backhand winner to take an impassable 5-2 lead in the set. She then converted one of the set points on her next serve
game to take the set score lead 1-0.
The second set also followed a similar pattern. Having gained the psychological advantage in the contest, Vinci continued to play her natural game freely and created match winning opportunities. She broke her opponent’s serve three
times in the set to seal the match in straight sets after one hour and fourteen minutes of play.
Vinci’s ground play was superior as she created all sorts of problems for her opponent. With her aggressive and attacking approach, the Italian pushed her opponent right back to the baseline form where she created tight angles.
Vinci, who seems to have special liking for the clay surface, converted long rallies in her favour with her excellent on-court movement and established firm control over the situation.
A satisfactory 55 percent first serve conversion was achieved by the Italian while 61 percent of the points were converted on return. Vinci made most of the chances presented to her as she converted six out of nine break chances
in the match. Kleybanova struggled to time the ball and committed a number of unforced errors in both sets. The Russian failed to execute her game plan and paid the heavy price.
Winner of four Women’s Tennis Association title, Robert Vinci had a decent start to the season. She lifted her first title of the season at Hobart. She then teamed up with compatriot Sara Errani to clinch Pattaya City Doubles
title. Vinci will be hoping to continue her good form in her upcoming matches at the tournament as well however consistency is going to be the key if she wants to stand a chance against top seeded players at the tournament.
In her next match at the red clay courts Madrid Open, Vinci will take on Chinese Li Na. Li Na thrashed out Czech Iveta Benesova 6-1, 6-4 to reach that far.
