Roberta Vinci defeats Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round of 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open
Roberta Vinci is one step closer to her fourth WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) title after dispatching world No. 51 Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia in the second round of the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open. Vinci surprisingly eased to
victory with a 6-1, 6-4 score over her Russian opponent.
It looked as if it was going to be a tough battle since Shvedova played some great tennis to oust Taiwanese Chang Kai-Chen on route to Vinci in the second round of the tournament. However, it didn’t turn out to be that tough because
Vinci knew that she had to play better and that’s all what she did.
Vinci started off great by breaking Shvedova’s serve immediately. Shvedova hammered a single ace, 59 percent of her first serves and won 38 percent of points on them. Whereas the Italian pro completely followed the rules and didn’t
commit any double fault, winning 67 percent of points on her service game and 62 percent of points on her return game. Vinci was looking very solid throughout the game and played her Russian opponent with right tactics. Shvedova was not able to use her two-handed
backhand strength and completely looked out of form throughout the match. In the end it was 6-1 to Vinci.
In the second set Shvedova started to play better but Vinci did not let her find her footing. Vinci was going to take this set as well, as she saved 50 percent breakpoints in service and 40 percent of breakpoints in return. Shvedova
continued to make sloppy errors and made things easier for the Italian to break her serves twice in the match. Vinci earned 57 percent of points on her service game and 45 percent of points on return to succeed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the match.
Vinci will now play Virginie Razzano of France for a place in the semifinal of the tournament. Razzano edged past Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova and Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain in straight sets to make it this far.
