Roberta Vinci disposes Andrea Hlavackova to reach round two - BNP Paribas Katowice Open 2013
World number 13, Roberta Vinci, started the BNP Paribas Katowice Open campaign with an immature triumph against the injury-stricken 76th ranked Czech professional, Andrea Hlavackova. She won the opening set 6-2 and was
leading the scores 2-0 before her opponent had to retire from the event due to dizziness.
Vinci is the second seed contest in the tournament and is expected to reach the grand finale along with the likes of the top seed Czech superstar, Petra Kvitova, who registered straight sets 6-4, 6-4 victory against Misaki Doi
to reach the second round.
The opening set witnessed a gruelling contest at the start with both players capitalising on their serves before swapping breakthroughs in the fourth and fifth game. However, the pressure was imposed by the 30-year-old Italian
in the sixth game who broke serve to take the lead for the second time in the set and capitalised on it with a serve hold.
Hlavackova couldn’t respond to the late onslaught of her rival and lost another breakpoint in the eighth game that rounded off the opening set proceedings in quick succession. Vinci looked to be on top of her form and kept the
rallies short by bringing her experience into play.
In the second set, the Italian veteran held her serve and won the breakpoint to take the lead of 2-0. Hlavackova received some medical treatment but after the brief consultation with her physio and medical staff, she decided to
call it a day and retire from the event.
While conducting the press conference after the immature victory at the red clay courts of Katowice, Vinci said, “I like it here. Everyone is really friendly and the court is quite fast, which is a good thing because it suits my
game. I'm just taking it one at a time and we'll see how it goes.”
Next up for the second seed Italian will be the Dutch upcoming star, Kiki Bertens, who sidelined the Spanish youngsters, Lara Arruabarrena, in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to book a date with Vinci. It will be a tough contest but Vinci
is expected to see through Bertens and reach the quarter-finals.
