Roberta Vinci eases past Silvia Soler-Espinosa in round one – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Top seeded Roberta Vinci, tumbled over the Spanish contestant, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, in straight sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Tuesday. She clobbered a 6-2, 7-6(5) score line against the world number 75 to advance into the second round at
this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International level event taking place in Acapulco, Mexico.
The world number 23, Vinci, displayed top notch performance to trash the Spanish rising star in their third meeting. She not only improved to a 3-0 record in the head-to-head series against Soler-Espinosa and booked a place in the round of 16 at the Fairmont
Acapulco Princess.
"It was a tough match but I'm happy I won," the Italian said after a post match conference. "When I was up a set and 2-1 I was a little bit nervous, and it was so hot too, so I had to fight a few things. It was very different in Monterrey last week, it was
much colder - but now I have all day to rest and prepare for tomorrow."
"It's not easy, but it's okay," Vinci added about being the favourite. "You have a lot of pressure on you but I just try to focus on each match."
Vinci went berserk in the opening round of this clay court tournament and bagged the opening four games successively before the Spaniard could hold on. She then held her composure and swiped in remaining serves, ultimately clinching the opener with a 6-2
score line.
The Italian veteran kept momentum sailing into the following set and earned the coveted break in the opening game. However, she lost her edge in the follow-up game and then exchanged two serve breaks to enforce a tie-breaker. Vinci was trailing 1-4 in it
when she hit back with a fitting reply and pulled out the set with a 7-6(5) win.
Summing up the 29-year-old’s performance, Vinci smacked eight aces and capitalised on five out of eight break chances. The Italian also brushed off eight out of 11 breakpoints she came across and nudged up a better first serve share of 62 per cent in contrast
with the Spaniard’s 43 per cent.
Next in line for the highest ranked player of this clay court event is the French starlet, Stephanie Foretz Gacon, who also warded off later resistance to secure this spot. Gacon cashed in seven out of 11 break chances to overpower her compatriot, Mathilde
Johansson, with a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory in two hours.
