Roberta Vinci flashes past Michaella Krajicek in the quarter-finals – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Italian tennis ace, Roberta Vinci, showed flawless tennis to oust the Dutch starlet, Michaella Krajicek, in straight sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012, a clay court tournament held in Acapulco, Mexico. She formulated a 6-2, 6-0 victory over the 23-year-old
to secure a place in the final four on Thursday.
The world number 23 tumbled over Krajicek in an hour-long marathon in their third meeting. Vinci broke five times to not only pocket this match but also maintained her winning record against the Dutch at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International
event.
Vinci, seeded top in this tournament, entered the first set with conviction and held her opening serve. She maintained consistency in her game and capitalised on two out of four break opportunities to seal the opener by winning six games to two.
The Italian veteran improved her form in the following set and after going on a six-game rampage, she pulled out the opener with a bagel. Vinci blocked both breakpoints she encountered and capitalised on three out of five break chances to manifest an exceptional
6-0 score line.
The 29-year-old ended the match by clicking 58 points in contrast with Krajicek’s 31. She mustered her performance by smacking five ferocious aces and marking 18 out of 25 points on her first serve share.
Vinci will square off against her third seeded compatriot, Sara Errani, who eased past the Spanish lucky loser, Estrella Cabeza Candela, in straight sets to set-up this date. Errani saved only one out of five breakpoints she faced but cashed in half of the
12 break opportunities to register a 6-4, 6-3 score line in 100-minutes.
Another Italian star, Flavia Pennetta, will join Vinci in the semi-finals. The second seed slaughtered the Colombian qualifier, Mariana Duque-Marino, with a spectacular 6-0, 6-4 success. She reeled off the opening eight games successively to steal the show.
Pennetta converted seven out of 11 break opportunities to her advantage and saved three out of six breakpoints she came across.
Next up for Pennetta is the fourth seed, Irina Camelia-Begu, who dumped Magdalena Rybarikova with a breadstick to occupy this position.
