Roberta Vinci gallops past Simona Halep to the second round – Open GDF Suez 2013
World number 16, Roberta Vinci, cleared the first hurdle at the Open GDF Suez in Paris without any problem. She dispatched the 48th ranked Romanian, Simona Halep, who was completely out of touch and failed to create
an impact throughout the encounter. The fifth seed Italian clinched the triumph in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 and booked a berth in the second round of the event.
Vinci was under the cosh at the start but she escaped a deuce in the opening game and held her serve which was followed by emphatic four winners that posted a lead of 2-0 for her. The 21-year-old Halep was able to just win a single
point in the following two games that drowned her to a trail of 0-4. It was looking pretty ominous for the Romanian who was disgusted by her performance and hinted at smacking the racquet at the courts but controlled her temper at the right time.
No twist of luck for Halep witnessed the opening set ending in quick succession. Vinci was able to register a bagel after a bit of effort to register the third breakpoint of the match in a row. She was on roll and pumped up to
take the revenge of the last year’s loss at the hands of the Romanian in the Barcelona Open during April.
The 29-year-old Italian held her serve in the first game of the second game and won two points in the following game but couldn’t stop her opponent from winning the game. It was a pleasant moment for the youngster who received
a sarcastic applause from the crowd as well. Both players capitalised on their serves for the next five games that pushed the scores at 4-3 in favour of the fifth seed Italian.
Halep was again pushed under the woods in the eighth game of the second set. She escaped three deuces in the game but couldn’t hold her counterpart from converting the breakpoint followed by a fourth deuce of the game. It was a
terrible ending to a promising start for the Romanian who had to break her rival’s serve to keep the match alive but she couldn’t and surrendered in just 52 minutes.
Roberta Vinci plays Mona Barthel in round two.
