Roberta Vinci gives a shocking upset to Agnieszka Radwanska in the fourth round – US Open 2012
Ranked 19th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Roberta Vinci prevailed over Agnieszka Radwanska in the fourth round of the US Open Championship held on Monday evening. The Polish contender received a shocking
upset at the hands of the Italian veteran, 6-1, 6-4.
Vinci told the reporters in an on court interview, “I lost the first four times we played, but today I played an unbelievable match. The first set was unbelievable and the second set she was getting better, but sometimes
you close your eyes and just play, and the balls were going in. It was just unbelievable for me today.”
She further added about her future encounter, she said, "I'm happy to play her (Sara Errani) - for sure an Italian goes to the semi-finals. She's my best friend and I'm so happy she won against Angelique today. It has been
an unbelievable week and unbelievable tournament for us here.”
The second seeded Polish tennis ace secured the initial game in the opening set to mark her 1-love lead but immediately, the scores line levelled to one-all. The Italian professional broke Radwanska’s serve in the third game
and took off a flying start, marking her 2-1 lead. For the later part of the set, the Polish number one got weak and Vinci grabbed hold of the opportunity, wrapping up the golden moment with a 6-1 win.
In the subsequent set, the 23-year-old tennis ace tried her best to smash her rival and squared the score line twice i.e. in the sixth game by 3-3 and eighth game by 4-4 respectively. However, she was unable to uphold her
momentum and closed the set with her 4-6 loss.
The 20th seeded veteran defeated the world number two, Radwanska for the first time and stamped her 1-4 win in the head 2 head series. Previously, the Pole gave her Italian rival a straight sets defeat
by 7-6(1), 6-4 in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open earlier this season.
For the next round of the Grand Slam, Vinci will contest in the all-Italian clash against the world number 10, Sara Errani. Prior to this, 25-year-old Errani surprised her German rival Angelique Kerber by giving her a straight
sets upset.
