Roberta Vinci ousts Kaia Kanepi to enter round two – Topshelf Open 2013
Top seed, Roberta Vinci, breezed past the Estonian contender, Kaia Kanepi, in straight sets at the Topshelf Open 2013 on Tuesday. She penned down a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the Estonian to secure a place in the round of 16 at this
Wimbledon warm-up tournament taking place in s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
The Italian star dominated throughout the battle to power into the pre-quarters. With this victory, Kanepi avenged her loss at the Estoril Open last season and improved to 3-1 lifetime in the head-to-head series against the Estonian.
The gorgeous Italian commented in a courtside interview after clinching the match, "It was my first match on grass this year, so it takes some getting used to," Vinci said. "But overall, I played a great match."
Vinci made a drastic start as she suffered the first blow in the opening game to trail at 0-2. However, she quickly recovered in the very next game and then stayed focused. The Italian wiped out last four games and clinched the
opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 11th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Vinci kept momentum rolling in the following set. She lost her serve twice but availed three break chances to seal the set with a 6-3 win.
Up next for the Italian is the Romanian star, Simona Halep. The Romanian rallied past the German teenager, Annika Beck, in a three-set thriller to progress. Halep is coming from winning her maiden WTA title few days ago. She is
in great run of form and the top seed needs to maintain consistency in her game to progress further at this WTA International level tournament.
Vinci reflected about her upcoming battle, "It will be tough. Simona's feeling confident. She won a tournament last week on clay. It will be different here, but I will have to play a great match to win. I'm ready to play tomorrow,
I'm focused and I'll try my best to win."
The Ukrainian lucky loser, Lesia Tsurenko, will join Vinci in the next round. She jolted down a 5-0 retirement victory against Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova.
The Slovakian veteran stated in a post match presser, "It was just exhaustion after last week. I really had nothing in me. I had a wonderful week last week, and I still wanted to give my best here, but sometimes the body says no."
The former world number five, Hantuchova felt dizziness after trailing 0-5. As a result, she was forced to pull out from the tournament.
With this triumph, Tsurenko set up a date with the Swiss challenger, Stefanie Voegele.
