Roberta Vinci ousts Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round – US Open 2012
Seeded 20th in the US Open draw, Roberta Vinci, registered a hard-fought win against the Kazakh, Yaroslava Shvedova, at the Flushing Meadows on Thursday. The Italian penned down a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 success
in the second round held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in Corona Park at Queens, New York.
The Italian tennis professional showed her top class performance and picked a classic start in the opening set. However, Shvedova gradually picked momentum but by the end of fourth game, she fruitfully equalized the scores
to 2-all. Desperately hungry for victory, Vinci had to face a hard-hitting upset by 3-6 in the opening set of the match.
In the second set, the world number 45, Shvedova was unable to hold her initial serve. Using the situation to her advantage, the Italian professional made a strong entry in the set by clinch the opening games and built a
2-0 score line upfront. Later on, the scores squared to 4-4, as the Kazakh contender broke her opponents serve and secured a fair chance to upset her. Unlike before, Vinci adopted a stern take and leaped forward to claim the second set at 7-5.
The 24-year-old had a relatively higher first serve percentage of 66, except that she could capitalize on barely one out of three break points. The Italian veteran snatched all the serve breaks offered to her, with 17 of
23 first serve points to assist her set win.
The right-hander Kazakh pounced forward to attain the win in the third set and the scores kept levelling down after every successive game. Vinci maintained her intensity and converted all the three break points presented
to her. Although, she had an average first serve of 62 percent but she bagged 15 of 24 points on it to take the upper hand in the contest. On the contrary, Shvedova could only nail down two of four break points.
Both the contenders have battled against one another in the second round of the Barcelona Ladies Open previously in the year 2011m with Vinci dismantling her contender by claiming a 6-1, 6-4 win. By the end of this match,
Vinci stamps her 2-0 lead over Shvedova in the head-to-head series.
The Italian tennis ace will contest the Slovakian challenger Dominika Cibulková in the subsequent round of the Grand Slam Champion.
