Roberta Vinci outfoxes Coco Vandeweghe in the opening round – Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012
Top seeded Roberta Vinci breezes past the America competitor, Coco Vandeweghe, in straight sets at the Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012 on Monday. She clobbered a 7-5, 7-5 win over the New York City native to book a spot in the round of 16 at this WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) International tournament held in Monterrey, Mexico.
The Italian veteran fully capitalised on the several unforced errors Vandeweghe committed and converted five out of eight break opportunities to her advantage to pull out the victory in their first meeting. After earning success in this one hour and 40-minutes
battle, Vinci advanced into the second round at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club.
World number 23, Vinci assertively entered the opening set and drew the first blood in the opening game. Despite losing her edge in the very next game, she maintained consistency in her game and slid remaining serves. The Italian got the breakthrough in
the eleventh game and clinched the opener with a 7-5 score line.
The 29-year-old kept her rhythm in the following set and earned the coveted break in the opening game to take the initial lead. She held her composure and broke the American’s serve again in the seventh game, subsequently going 5-2 up. However, Vinci lost
her ways and after losing the following three games, she levelled the scores at 5-5. The Italian gave her all in the eleventh game and after cashing in her third break opportunity, she not only took the lead once more but eventually bagged the set with a 7-5
victory.
Overall, the Taranto resident found eight break opportunities and capitalised on five of them. She also brushed off four out of seven breakpoints she faced and converted a better first serve share of 54 percent as opposed to Vandeweghe’s 43 percent. Spicing
the match further, Vinci impressively clicked 28 out of 39 points on it.
Next up for the highest ranked player in the world is the Russian challenger, Nina Bratchikova, who destroyed her compatriot, Anastasia Pivovarova, with a breadstick earlier that day. She broke Pivovarova’s serve six times to register an exceptional 6-3,
6-1 score line.
