Roberta Vinci plonks Jelena Jankovic to claim the title in the final – Texas Tennis Open 2012
29-year-old, Roberta Vinci dispatches the Serbian contender, Jelena Jankovic, in straight sets in the final of the Texas Tennis Open. The Italian contestant nudged past her rival with a 7-5, 6-3, win to crown the title this
season.
The Italian tennis star was unable to maintain her initial serve and Jankovic took advantage of the opportunity to bagged the initial two games, bringing the scores to 2-love. The 23rd ranked veteran
sustained her pace and laboured hard to level the scores to 4-all by the middle of the set. However, her journey to the top was not that easy but fortunately she emerged as a surprise winner.
The former world number one never played to the best of her potential, as she could not fire a single ace and even double faulted three times. On the other hand, she had a moderately better first serve percentage of 69, converting
20 of 36 points. The third seeded Italian did not commit any double faults nor struck any ace. She had a low first serve percentage of 47 but successfully bagged 15 of 27 first serve points. The right-hander Serbian clinched two of six break points and Vinci
grabbed three of eight points.
The 34th ranked Jankovic’s morale smashed until the second set. She was unable to maintain her initial serve and seemed powerless in front of her rival. The Italian finalist captured her 3-love lead.
The Serbian managed to equalize the scores to 3-all with a break of serve but she was unable to sustain her intensity. The Italian participant kept her momentum and bounced forward, jolting her opponent with a 6-3 win.
The Italian contender exhibited flawless serves, bombarding her rival with three aces and never committed a single double fault. She had a low first serve percentage of 45, bagging 13 of 19 first serve points. She broke her
opponent twice, whilst the Serbian star double faulted twice and could merely strike one break point out of her five precious opportunities. She also had a high first serve percentage of 65, clinching nine of 20 first serve points
Considering the previous history, the Serbian fans were optimistic for their tennis star. It was the fourth encounter between the two, where the Jankovic still takes the lead of 3-1 in the head-to-head series. The last time
the two contested against each other in the earlier rounds of the US Open Championships and Vinci received a straight sets upset by 6-2, 6-3 at the hands of Jankovic.
