Roberta Vinci rallies past Bojana Jovanovski in semi-finals – Texas Tennis Open 2012
Former world number 18, Roberta Vinci disposed the Serbian wild card entrant, Bojana Jovanovski, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 in the semi-finals of the Texas Tennis Open on Thursday. The Serbian was unable to show any resistance
and was defeated badly in a total of 52 minutes.
Vinci in an interview said, “I played well. She played so-so. But 60 60 is not easy. You have to stay focused every point, every game. I know it will be tough, but I have a chance to win tomorrow for sure. I will try my best.
I'm so happy to be in my first final of the year.”
Jovanovski was unable to secure her opening serve; the Italian took advantage of her rival’s weak performance and clinched all the games in the set to claim a 6-love score. The 29-year old Italian veteran pounced two aces
and committed double faults twice. Her first serve rate was 56 percent; converting eight of 14 points on it. However, Serbian miserably failed to strike any ace and even double faulted three times at critical moments in the set. She merely managed to attain
a 59 first serve percentage, securing four of 13 first serve points.
The following set took off in a similar fashion as the first one did, with the 5ft 9in Serbian being unable to preserve her initial serve in the set. Unfortunately, she could not even secure a single game as before and seemed
helpless in front of her rival’s flawless serves. Vinci broke her opponent’s serve in every single game of the set and rocketed away to victory with a bagel at 6-0.
The 87th ranked Serbian professional double faulted twice, whereas both contenders were unable to fire any ace against one another in the second set. The Italian participant had a good first serve
rate of 71 percent, converting nine of 10 first serve points. On the other hand, the Serbian underdog merely managed to deliver 60 percent of the first serve on target, with six of the12 first serve points in her bag.
This match was the second face-off between the two contestants and the Italian maintained her outstanding record as before, resulting in a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series. The previous encounter between the two took place
in the year 2011 at the Mercury Insurance Open held in Carlsbad, when Jovanovski exhibited a better run of form but lost by 6-3, 4-6, 1-6 in the first round.
The Italian tennis professional is drawn against the former world number one Jelena Jankovic for the finals.
