Roberta Vinci reaches the final spot at the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open
Italian tennis player Roberta Vinci defeated Spanish tennis pro Laura Pous-Tio in three difficult sets at the semi-final of the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open, winning the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4). Vinci, who currently resides in Palermo,
took over two hours and thirty five minutes to defeat her opponent, who was a qualifier at the tournament.
Vinci has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) circuit since 1999, having turned pro over thirteen years ago. Meanwhile, Pous-Tio is only 26-years-old and had turned professional in 2003.
The Spanish pro managed to oust her Italian opponent in the first set, defeating the player 6-4. Although Pous-Tio did not score many aces in the process but she managed to break Vinci once to win 53 percent of the total points
in the set. However, Vinci scored an ace and committed one double fault in the set. She attempted to break Pous-Tio, but the Spanish player successfully managed to clinch three breakpoints en route to the second set.
Vinci put up a tougher fight in the second set, determined to avenge her defeat in the first set. She scored 65 percent of points on her first serves and committed one double fault. Pous-Tio on the other hand did not commit any
double faults, but was broken two times out of four. The Italian pro managed to clinch 50 percent of breakpoints on her way to the final set.
Pous-Tio completely disappointed her fans in the second set. The Spanish player was expected to regain her strength, as she had the advantage of age and height; however, she fell quickly to Vinci in the third set. Nonetheless,
the Spanish pro played tremendously in the final set as she was determined to punish Vinci for her defeat in the second set 4-6. She broke Italian Pro four times out of five, setting up a more impressive percentage. However, Vinci emerged victorious in a tie-breaker
which assisted her to win more points than Pous-Tio. The Italian player, who is 28-years-old, won the set 6-4.
Pous-Tio lost the match in eight games, with sixteen service and return games per player. At the end of the tie-breaking set, Vinci had won an impressive 53 percent of the total points. Overall, she won 115 of 224 points in the
entire match. She scored a total of two aces, and saved seven of thirteen break points.
The Italian pro will face Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic in the final spot of the tournament. Czech edged past fifth seed Sara Errani of Italy with a 6-1, 7-5 score to reach the main spot of the tournament.
