Roberta Vinci saves an upset against Yanina Wickmayer in the opener – Rogers Cup 2012
World number 28, Roberta Vinci, enjoyed her two hours and 27 minutes spell against the 30th ranked Belgian starlet, Yanina Wickmayer, in the opening round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada. She won the opening set
6-2, lost the second 3-6 but fought back to win the final 7-5.
At the end of the match, Vinci commented, “I played a good first set and had a lot of chances to break her in the second set, but she was starting to play better. In the third set I just told myself, 'Fight every point, every point,'
and I got back into it. I was hitting my forehand especially well in the third set. I was really focused at the end. I was a little bit lucky on her match point - maybe she panicked a little bit - but I'm so happy to win today, because Yanina's a really tough
player."
The opening set witnessed a tough time for the 22-year-old Belgium who was under the cosh right from the start. She managed to squeeze to serve holds after a tough battle but couldn’t hold her opponent from winning a breakthrough
on the third occurrence.
Vinci was facing no problem at all in holding on to her serve games. So, she cruised away to a lead of 4-2. Furthermore, she broke serve for the second time on the trot to build a lead of 5-2 in the first. She served for the set
and successfully held her opponent from winning a breakpoint that ended the opening set proceedings.
Wickmayer started the second set on a high-note and showed better control over her serves. She won a breakthrough in the sixth game that proved to be the pivotal factor in deciding the winner of the set. Vinci saw her set lead
drowning as she failed to break serve back and level the scores.
The swap of breakpoints was coupled with two breakthroughs for the Belgian who led the scores 5-1 in the final. She looked set to win the encounter but three straight breakpoints from the 29-year-old Italian broke her heart.
Roberta Vinci takes on Ana Ivanovic in the second round.
